Nemean Lion added the G2 Kingwell Hurdle to his tally of big wins, justifying favouritism to win by a length and a half from Irish raider Colonel Mustard and Goshen.
The seven-year-old son of Golden Horn won last year’s G2 Premier Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso after running third in the G1 Tolworth Hurdle. A winner on the Flat in France for Andre Fabre, he has now won five of his 17 starts, including four out of eight hurdle races for Kerry Lee.
Bred by Dr Christoph Berglar, Nemean Lion holds entries at the Cheltenham Festival in the Champion Hurdle and the Stayers’ Hurdle.
It was a successful half an hour for Golden Horn’s offspring on Saturday afternoon and shortly after Nemean Lion’s triumph at Wincanton there was further success for Mothill, who came out on top in a driving finish to the Class 2 handicap hurdle at Ascot.
The six-year-old, who is trained by Neil Mulholland, was bred by Shadwell and he too is a winner both on the Flat and over hurdles, with five victories to his credit.
Golden Horn could be represented by five runners next month at Cheltenham, with First Street also holding a Champion Hurdle entry, Golden Ace and Pawapuri entered for the G2 Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle and Golden Move engaged in the G1 Triumph Hurdle.
