The Package, whose five victories include the Fulke Walywn Kim Muir Challenge Cup at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, has been retired by the Johnson family at the age of 12.
The son of Kayf Tara was bred by Barkfold Manor Stud from the Ardross mare Ardent Bride and won five races for trainer David Pipe in his nine-season career, including two Listed steeplechases, a maiden hurdle and a bumper.
In the late David Johnson’s famous blue, green and white silks, he won on debut at Towcester at the age of four, and was as spring-heeled as ever when recording a 12-length victory at the Cheltenham Festival for amateur rider Jamie Codd at the age of 12.
His five wins and ten places from 32 starts saw The Package amass £180,424 in prize-money having been bought for just €10,000 as a foal at Tattersalls Ireland.
