The Schiaparelli mare Wyenot already had three wins and some black type to her name but she got her season off to the best possible start by winning Cheltenham’s first race of the season for trainer Henry Daly and Overbury’s sponsored jockey Alice Stevens.
Wyenot, bred by the Bailey family from the Minster Son mare Ambrosia’s Promise, did not take long to come to hand, running in her first bumper as a spring four-year-old and finishing third. Thereafter she won two novice hurdle races on the bounce, and added to her tally of wins this March at Kempton. She ended last season in the Listed Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in April, finishing third behind the Cheltenham Festival winner Golden Ace, by Schiaparelli’s neighbour in our stallion yard, Golden Horn.
After Friday’s win, Wyenot’s burgeoning race record stands at four wins and two thirds from seven starts. She is described by her trainer as “a real pro over hurdles”.
